Abbotts Ann Players

Abbotts Ann Players is a small, friendly drama group which has been active for over 20 years. Its main purpose is to present two or three productions in a year and to enjoy the process of bring a script to life. We meet regularly on Tuesday evenings, at 7.30 in the village hall, and at other times, by arrangement. When we are rehearsing just before a production, we may meet twice a week.

We would be delighted to welcome some new members; if you have an interest and some enthusiasm. Some like to try their hand at acting; others enjoy helping with scenery, stage-management, lighting, sound, costume, publicity etc.. You do not need to be experienced -- several of our members had never been 'on the stage' or 'behind the scenes' until they joined us, and some have been surprised to discover what talents they possessed. For instance, we have had two new members, one of whom acted for the first time and another who took on stage-management in our recent production of Pinocchio; both started with some doubts but, eventually, performed with great success.

What kind of plays do we put on ? Mostly comedies, thrillers, pantomimes and revues.

We do not have formal auditions, but we do meet to read the scripts we are intending to produce, obviously. The director -- whoever he or she is -- then sorts out the casting and who will carry out other important functions. These activities offer chances for acting, dancing, singing and technical matters and allow members to do a lot or a little. Productions are usually in autumn, winter or spring though, occasionally, one may be in early summer.

We also have some social events such as theatre visits, quizzes, barbecues which are pleasant and enjoyable.

You do not need to live in Abbotts Ann -- you may live in Andover or in one of the surrounding villages. All are welcome.

Why not come along on a Tuesday to gain some ideas of our activities ? Leave that television and do something more creative.

The subscription -- a mere £5 a year -- helps pay for coffees, the occasional subsidised treat and hire of the hall. We do not aim to make a profit and so, sometimes, we are able to give donations to local charities such as Young Carers, Countess of Brecknock Hospice, Riding for the Disabled.

If you would like further details, please phone the Hon. Secretary, Margaret Brooks (01264-710393), or Committee Member, Mary Whittle (01264-710170) who will be happy to help.

The autumn production for 2006 was “Arms and the Man” by George Bernard Shaw, directed by Mary Whittle. In 2007 we did a pantomime “Puss in Boots” directed by Sheila Wiles. Both were enjoyed. The next production will be taking place in November. This will be a Revue - sure to be popular. See the separate notice
